The Final Update

Below is the final video for your review. I hope it is somewhat helpful.

As you have heard, you are allowed to use ONE page (one side) of handwritten notes. I have made this decision due to the fact that you are limited by time (less than 90 minutes) with a demanding essay.

I will be at school all day Friday so please feel free to drop by and hand in assignments or to just say hello! I wish you all the very best next semester. I hope your time in IB Psychology was enjoyable and that you feel that you got something out of it! Please e-mail me any suggestions for next year (and what not to change!). Every year I go back to the "lab" and redesign the course.

Sunday night the blog will shift to world history, BUT, there will be plenty of postings relevant to psychology AND those of you testing in psych should check it often!

Sweet, thanks Caro. BTW after doing the schizophrenia notes i saw the movie "It's a beautiful mind." It was wierd because i ended up noticing a lot more symptoms of his schizophrenia than just his delusions like i did when i saw it last. He even went Catatonic a couple of times woohoo!

Ulysses: My pleasure boss!

Robert: That is pretty cool!

Joey: Of course!

Aw, world history! I miss that class...you really prepared us for IB History (Though I actually think your class was kinda harder)

Mr. Caro said...

Ha! Thanks Brittany!

It is going to be strange to be teaching it on Monday!!!

Joseph said...

Mr. Caro you should have your history kids do the Descartes reading the first night for homework.

Mr. Caro said...

Joseph!

Funny you mention that! They do read a short clip from one of his works but not the same document.

The one that really gets some is from Kant. It is brilliant, but a bit confusing in parts.

They also read some Locke! Not a bad excerpt.

I love the new profile photo Joseph!!!

Yeah I thought that picture was pretty awesome. I wish I had had you for World History last year.

Do you think there might be any chance of having an IB Psych 2?

Mr. Caro said...

Joseph, who did you have?

I wish there was a Psych 2. With the current budget cuts they will not allow it. That is too bad.

We should just hold one as a block 5 class!

Mr. Caro said...

would it make sense to use twitter as a place to hold online sessions?

Joseph said...

I had Mr. Smith. Our class had a very, very low workload and consisted largely of worksheets, videos, and games. The tests were made up of extremely easy multiple choice questions and 3 paragraph "essays".

whats twitter? gosh i am soo sad and nervous! i feel like we i am gonna fail and like i might have that disorder whats it called where you cant handle being away? college kids get it? well i have that and i might not be able to cope and fall into a deep abyss called depression!

Joseph said...

I have heard of twitter but never used it before.

Anonymous said...

and while we are here, whats the definition of abnormal behavior?

Mr. Caro said...

Omar, see your intro notes from the first reading.

Twitter is a site where people basically post comments. I guess it is like the blog but more open. It might be cool to use for review discussions etc.

Anonymous said...

yeah it seems good! (twitter) this is fine too? okay i used that definition but i feel like its broad and vague. have pippin hack into it and create yourself a free account

Hey Caro,
So first of all thank you so very much for letting us use a page of notes on the final. I really appreciate it!
Second of all, I was wondering what your deadline is for Friday and turning the Case Booklet in? Would you say they have to be in by 3pm? Earlier, later?

Mr. Caro said...

3pm it is!

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Mr AC10, the new Franz Ferdinand album came out in the US today...it's different than their previous two albums but it still has the recognizable Franz sound.

Let me know if you would like me to burn you a copy.

Mr. AC360 also came out with a documentary on my life. its called "life with omar 360"

Mr. Caro said...

I would love it!

About the class grades, how are participation points going to work. I mean i always work on the assignments when we are given time but Watson always gets mad at us for talking and working together. She threatens our participation grades when we are working IN THE CLASS because we are working together, while most of the class just leaves the room and messes around texting and talking all they want in the rotunda and in the library. If she actually grades us down for working together(2 minds are better than 1...) then how is that fair when others aren't working at all?

This video, like all of your videos, is extremely helpful! Thank you so much!

Mr. Caro said...

Anonymous3.14,

Your concern is well placed and heard by me. I am not happy with any students who did not use class time well. This was a fear of mine that I knew would be hard to combat with my absence.

Understand that I know all of you pretty well at this time. I will be able to tell most clearly from your work and Watkins' report to me how it went. What's more, I have been watching tardies and missed classes closely.

If you have any more concerns, I HIGHLY recommend you e-mail me. Being anonymous doesn't help you here because I cannot protect your grade!

Hey Caro,
When is the onset of OCD?

Mr. Caro said...

It is pretty wide in range actually. Any stage almost really, but typically teens through adulthood. Not to much in the elderly as an onset.

Mr. Caro said...

Thanks Alex!

Anonymous said...

Ok so could you say that both anorexia and OCD have about the same age window for onset. But that they differ in that different factors are interacting to produce each disorder... or something like that?

Mr. Caro said...

A possible theme here is what the two disorders share in common which are: anxiety, compulsive behaviors and obsessive thoughts, AND they are the result of a complex interaction of biological determinants and environmental stressors. Try to back up and look at the two disorders. They also involve some level of control. The anorexic often feels she lacks control in many areas of her life, but she does control her body so it becomes the focus. The individual suffering from OCD feels helpless to stop the obsessive thoughts and behaviors. When he/she does not follow through, anxiety results. Anxiety that is very powerful much like the anxiety a girl with anorexia suffers when she does eat and is not able to purge herself.

So the themes could be: anxiety and Interactionism/Diathesis-stress model in that the disorders share anxiety in their characteristics. And the causes of the disorders are surely a result of the interaction of bio and environmental stressors.

Ok thank you Caro! I'm so sad this is the last night I'm going to have to stress about psych... :( it's such a bittersweet feeling.

Mr. Caro said...

Me too! I am REALLY going to miss it all. I will post a lot of psych articles still!

Anonymous said...

Would we work common assumptions for the disorders into the analysis?

Mr. Caro said...

Sure.

Chris said...

On the topic of anorexia and OCD, could you also make the connection that even with therapy and recovery, symptoms are still shown throughout life?

Mr. Caro said...

Sure!

Chris said...

Ok cool thanks Caro. Also, do you know any good studies for OCD? The reading had a couple, but they didn't seem that significant to OCD in general.

Anonymous said...

Hey Caro!
I can't seem to find your Diathesis-stress model powerpoint mentioned in the video. Do you have a link to it?
Or could you briefly explain it?

Mr. Caro said...

Those in the reading are fine

Mr. Caro said...

It is in the schizophrenia notes. Let me know if you don't have this. Or simply go here:
http://www.mrcaro.com/psychology/Schizophrenia.pptx

Chris said...

Would it be better to define OCD in the intro or when I start to delve in to OCD?

Chris said...

Never mind. I missed on the outline where it said I could define the disorder in P2

Anonymous said...

Caro! I'm looking over the powerpoint notes but I'm a bit confused. What does "HR" mean in the diathesis-stress model slide?

Mr. Caro said...

HR=high risk

Anonymous said...

for major depressive disorder is it ok to use Seligman as a study?

Mr. Caro said...

Yes.

Lauren said...

Thank you Mr. Caro!
The video was pretty epic!
This is what i wanted to do for my essay too! so thank you!

Mr. Caro said...

My pleasure Lauren!
