The Sleep of Reason


What does this image mean to you?

The writing on his art desk translates to, “The sleep of reason produces monsters.” The picture has a tone of death, so maybe he’s saying that when we sleep our imagination leaves us to insanity and death. I say death because those animals look like they could or will kill him. This picture could be a translation from Emily Dickinson’s poem, “I felt a funeral in my brain.” This painting could also translate from what we face or fear during the day will haunt us in our dreams and become nightmares.
