We were talking about this study in third block World History today. Here are a few clips of what the experiment was about. There are clear connections to world history in how people place themselves into roles that can influence their behavior in dramatic and unexpected ways.
Watch these below clips and post your reaction here! What is significant about Zimbardo's findings with respect to society and history?

Those people were really just volunteers for this experiment? How could they lose themselves and get so carried away?
Hey Carolyn!
We miss you in class!
It is amazing! People get carried away by their roles rather often! Abuse happens quite a bit in nursing homes, prisons, military, etc.
Get well soon!

That was crazy!!! It was weird when all the people were saying "prisoner 418 did a bad thing" simultaneously. I was surprised when he said that the "prisoners" actually started to think they were prisoners.
Today I was watching the movie Life is Beautiful on T.V. I don't know if you've seen or heard about it, but it's about a Jewish man and his wife and son in a concentration camp. Then when i watched this video, i started thinking about the movie and how horrible the Nazis treated their prisoners, but seeing how dramatically the people in this study changed over just a few days when put in a position of power, i realize that it was probably the same kind of situation there, but obviously with much worse results. However, that does not excuse the behavior of either of the groups.
So what I'm wondering now is what the relationships between the guards/prisoners were like before and after the study. Like if they were friends or acquaintances before, did that change after? If i was one of the prisoners, I don't know what kind of feelings I would have towards the guards after that kind of treatment. And for the guards, that must have been awkward to snap back to reality and think about what you'd been doing.

ahhhhhhhhhh something wrong...I couldn't hear anything.
Rachel, YES! It is creepy for sure! They got completely into their roles. We will see this happen in history on many occasions.
Sarah, excellent connections! Keep in mind, that many of those who worked in the Nazi camps were not life-long killers and haters. The environment can take control over our behavior. It is scary and this study is a warning or sorts.
From what I recall, they did not know each other prior to the study. There are videos of them post-experiment. The study had a profound affect on them. One of the prisoners became a counselor for real prisoners!
Phuong! How is life post IB Psych? Try other other youtube links in the embedded link?
So i just added this german movie called The Experiment based off of this to my netflix queue!! Youll have to check it out!
